Free Ringtone Companies Owe you Money

"Free" offers are seldom free.

There is usually a catch that can cost you.

A lawsuit involving "free" ringtones, is alleging just that.

Wireless subscribers are alleging in a class-action lawsuit in the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, that some carriers were charging wireless subscribers for content that they did not authorize.

Scott Hardy with Topclassactions.com said too many people, unknowingly, paid for news alerts, horoscopes, joke of the day and more.

These services were offered through Verizon and many other wireless carriers.

"You always see the commercials about getting a free ringtone," Hardy said. "But, in very small print, it might tell you or might not tell you that you're signing up for a subscription."

We found one complainant that had sounded off on Ripoffreport.com.

The complaint said, "I started getting text messages on my cell phone offering free ringtones. Next thing I know, a $9.99 monthly charge is buried in my 12 page AT&T bill."

If you believe you're a victim, you may owed part of the $63 million class-action lawsuit settlement.

In order to eligible, you must have received unwanted mobile services before November 2009.

Also, you must file a claim by February 22nd, 2010.

You may receive up to three months worth of subscription costs.

If you chose not to receive the money, there is an option available to that donate money to charity.

If you decide to donate to charity, the plantiff's attorneys have offered to match donations up to $250,000 total.
